Activity 3 is based on the information below and the literacy journeys of three Stage 3 students: Jamal, Harry and Anya.

Student development and maturation is a continuous, predictable sequence, but with a unique course for each child. Progress is loosely ‘mapped’ with expected milestones.

Academic progress is mapped by syllabuses. In NSW, this progress is described in syllabus continuums of learning, showing subject content knowledge and skills. Check the table of outcomes in the Continuum of learning in each syllabus. Do this by visiting BOSTES, selecting a syllabus, then clicking on ‘Syllabus elements’ and then ‘Outcomes.’

The development of literacy is captured in the NSW Literacy continuum K-10. The continuum describes student progress in literacy, ‘mapping’ progress across the whole curriculum.

In NSW, the syllabuses and the literacy continuum work together. They are underpinned by the anticipated levels of maturity of students at each stage of learning. Each student, however, takes a different path, depending on their background, their personal experiences, and their opportunities for learning.

Follow Harry, Jamal and Anya through an interactive literacy journey which will illustrate some of these differences. Interactive literacy journeys text version.
