Screen 1

The heading displays the text Constrained and unstrained skills.

A text box displays the text The critical aspects of the literacy continuum are described as being either constrained or unconstrained.

On the bottom right-hand corner there is a button ‘Next’, which when clicked activates the next screen.

On the subsequent screens two buttons are available ‘Next and ‘Prev’. Activating the ‘Prev’ button reverts to the previous screen. On the final screen, the ‘Prev’ only is available.

The first text box displays the text Constrained skills – phonics, Phonic awareness, Concepts about print.

The second text box displays the text Constrained skills are essential for the acquisition and ongoing development of literacy.

Short, sharp, explicit teaching focuses on developing and reinforcing Phonemic awareness, Phonics and Concepts about print as rapidly as possible.

Typically, these skills are mastered by the end of the third year at school.

These constrained skills are utilised and integrated as students continue their literacy development.

In the bottom right-hand corner there is a ‘Next’ button to go to the next slide which activates a new slide when clicked. The ‘Prev’ activates the previous slide.

The first text box displays the text Unconstrained skills - Reading texts, Comprehension, Vocabulary knowledge, Aspects of writing, Aspects of speaking.

The second text box displays the text Unconstrained skills are aspects of literacy that continue to develop, grow and expand throughout one’s lifetime.

These skills develop in complexity, and are applied more broadly as students progress through their schooling.

The integration of literacy skills becomes increasingly important as students face the increasing demands of the curriculum. Successful students use and transfer all aspects of literacy in flexible and fluid ways.
