Using the NSW Literacy continuum K-10

Clusters of markers – text version

Narrator

Clusters of markers. Clusters of markers are the same on the interactive and print versions of the literacy continuum K-10, but each cell shows only one or two of the markers.

Examination of one cell in detail will demonstrate the interactivity of this feature. In aspects of writing Cluster 4, it shows the beginning of the first marker of that cluster. When you move the cursor over the cell, the rest of the markers appear.

Markers that form part of the Best Start assessment are indicated. When you click on a cell, a pop up appears showing all the markers plus links to further online resources.

Notice the arrows on the top, bottom and sides of the pop up. Clicking on these arrows will move you to either the adjacent cluster or aspect of literacy. Reading up identifies what learning has come before. Reading down shows what teaching needs to occur next.

Reading across helps to identify the connections between those aspects of literacy. This feature helps to integrate literacy learning. Click on the ‘X’ in the top right-hand corner to close the pop up and return to the interactive Continuum.

Reading the Continuum in these ways is helpful to identify starting points for a student or group of students, to plan where to next, to track and monitor learning and to group students effectively.
