Using the NSW Literacy continuum K-10

Progressions of learning – text version

Screen 1

The heading displays the text Progressions of learning.

A text box displays the text On the print version; each critical aspect of literacy is identified by a different colour. The sequence of learning is from left to right - Cluster 1 to Cluster 16.

An arrow moves across the screen from left to right across the screen indicating progression along the continuum.

On the bottom right-hand corner there is a button ‘Next’, which when clicked activates the next screen.

On the subsequent screens two buttons are available ‘Next and ‘Prev’. Activating the ‘Prev’ button reverts to the previous screen. On the final screen, the ‘Prev’ only is available.

Screen 2

The heading displays the text Progressions of learning.

The first text box displays the text Teachers can track the progression of knowledge and skills development. This identifies where students are now and shows the next steps for learning.

Under the text box, an arrow moves from left to right across progression along the continuum with the text Aspects of speaking.

The second text box displays the text This line represents the progression of knowledge and skills in: Aspects of speaking.

Screen 3

The heading displays the text Progressions of learning.

The first text box displays the text Reading the continuum vertically shows how the critical aspects interrelate.

An arrow moves downwards from top to bottom. Three text boxes appear as the arrow moves downward, with the text Reading texts, Comprehension and Vocabulary knowledge.

The second text box displays the text Connections across the modes of reading, writing and speaking for a variety of audiences can also be made.

Screen 4

The heading displays the text Anya’s progress in Stage 3.

The text box displays the text Anya’s literacy skills are appropriate for a student in Stage 3. She needs support to develop her Vocabulary knowledge in particular, as well as Comprehension and Aspects of writing to become Stage appropriate.

In Stages 2 and 3, it is not appropriate to measure the constrained skills. Anya has demonstrated achievement of these skills, and will continue to use them to inform and develop her other literacy skills to achieve syllabus outcomes.

Three tabs appear along the top with the text, Cluster 10, Cluster 11 and Cluster 12.

Under the tabs an outline appears on five of the clusters. The outlined clusters indicate Anya’s place on the continuum. It shows that Anya’s and any student’s progress in one aspect can be different to the progress made in others. Anya’s progress is:

Reading texts - Cluster 12

Comprehension - Cluster 11

Vocabulary knowledge - Cluster 12

Aspects of writing - Cluster 11

Aspects of speaking - Cluster 10
