Inappropriate workplace behaviours

Inappropriate behaviours are sometimes displayed in the workplace, and this can result in the dismissal of employees. These behaviours include lack of punctuality, the wrong attitude, discrimination, sexual harassment, bullying, inappropriate use of confidential information and theft.

Maintaining appropriate behaviour and conduct in the workplace is an increasingly significant issue and one that provides employers with a challenge. Employers must take action and provide a safe and supportive environment by addressing the matters in line with organisational policies and workplace legislation.

  1. Read each of these workplace scenarios.

  2. Team up with 3 or 4 classmates to choose one of the scenarios around which your team will create and film a roleplay.

  3. Using Microsoft OneNote, collaborate with your team to:

    1. write a script for your role play

    2. assign the following roles to each team member:

      1. camera operator

      2. director

      3. sound operator

      4. voiceover role

      5. actors

      6. editor

      7. other relevant roles

  4. Record your roleplay using the webcam built into your laptop or a video camera with USB/SD card or memory stick

  5. Edit the footage with Adobe Premiere Elements, adding sound effects, music and voiceovers to enhance your film.

  6. Present your video to your classmates and get them to identify the inappropriate workplace behaviour.

In your script ensure that you:

  • identify the inappropriate workplace behaviour/s in the scenario

  • identify appropriate personnel who may provide assistance such as:

    • colleagues

    • supervisors

    • department managers

    • human resources officers

  • explain how the behaviour is inappropriate - incorporate an awareness of organisational policies, plans and procedures, terms and conditions of employment, rights and responsibilities of the employer and employee and relevant legislation:

  • evaluate how the inappropriate behaviour should be dealt with by the employer (including conflict resolution techniques).
