This video provides an orientation for this course. Work your way across the tab headings above.

This course has been designed with the assumption that you are already familiar with the new syllabuses and have completed the relevant Your school and the new syllabuses course available from the Professional learning – Curriculum page on the DEC Intranet.

You will need to have:

  • considered the results from the audit of professional learning, resources and teaching programs

  • engaged with Curriculum planning and programming for quality teaching, assessing and reporting (.pdf 251kB) and reflected on current practices

  • developed a scope and sequence that will:

    • allocate, to specific periods of time, the syllabus outcomes and content that will be taught and assessed, then reported to students and parents

    • promote connections within and across learning areas/stages and make links with contexts beyond school.

At the completion of this course, participants will have:

  • reviewed the learning needs of students in their school and the curriculum planning and programming practices that will bring about quality teaching, assessing and reporting

  • identified the features of an effective scope and sequence and its relationship to designing a quality unit of learning

  • applied an understanding of NSW syllabuses for the Australian curriculum to design teaching and learning sequences and integrate relevant resources in a quality unit of learning

  • developed effective strategies to assess student achievement and promote student learning.

This course provides an opportunity to plan and program for quality learning for the new curriculum. The principles and processes of curriculum planning and programming may be applied to develop a unit of learning that meets the learning needs of students.

It is preferable to collaborate with a small team of colleagues when engaging with this course. A more experienced teacher or supervisor may lead a group of teachers through this course as a presenter. Presenter notes (.pdf 872kB) are available to assist.

If the opportunity for collaboration is not available, teachers may complete the course individually then confer with a supervisor to have their course completion verified on MyPL.

Getting started

Teachers will review the professional learning courses listed below to build capacity and understanding to plan and program for a quality unit of learning. These include:

Teachers will focus on:

  • Student learning needs: What do I want the students to learn? Why does the learning matter? What do I want the students to do or produce? How well do I expect them to do it?

  • Scope and sequence: review your scope and sequence.

  • Collaborative planning processes: decisions to consider.

  • Activity: reflection

Unit of learning

7 hours

The teaching and learning cycle forms the framework to develop a quality unit of learning and asks the following four questions:

  • Where are my students now? How will the learning be differentiated to meet needs of particular students?

  • What do I want my students to learn? When teachers have analysed student assessment data from the previous phase in the teaching and learning cycle, they are now informed about their students' learning and are able to devise teaching programs to effectively address future needs.

  • How will my students get there? Teachers understand the principles of effective assessment, providing feedback and integrating assessment into a unit of learning.

  • How do I know when my students get there? Teachers consider the types of student assessment data they will collect and analyse.

  • write a unit of learning
