Barriers to Communication

Barriers to communication will affect the flow of information to potential customers and businesses. An effective communicator has the skills to recognise if and when there is a barrier to communication and how to overcome and resolve it. The most common barriers to effective communication include bias and stereotyping, lack of empathy, negative subtext, gender issues, individual differences, inconsistency, emotions, physical barriers, eg noise, inattention and pressure of time.

  1. As a class, use Bubbl.us to brainstorm barriers to communication and consider ways to avoid them.

  2. View the video 6 Communication Barriers and How You Can Avoid Them before you begin this task.

  3. Create a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation outlining the barriers to communication. Highlight what measures can be taken to reduce their impact.

    Your PowerPoint should:

    1. support your message

    2. stay connected with your listeners

    3. entertain and educate the audience.

  4. Present the PowerPoint to your class and have students assess how well you communicated your message.

  5. Upload your presentation into SlideShare.
