Charles Bean’s war

Your other great First World War legacy for the Australian people was the Australian War Memorial. Your great collaborator in the early years of this mammoth undertaking was war veteran John Treloar. So John, tell us about the early ideas and plans for a national war memorial?

Bean had the beginnings of an idea (.docx 528kB) for a national museum. He began collecting for a war memorial (.docx 528kB) everything that he deemed worthy of display. The Australian War Records Section was formed in London in 1917 and from there the Australian War Memorial developed.
