Calculating time and distance

How can we calculate time differences and distances across the Earth?

These calculations can be pretty tricky but Google Earth can give us a hand.

Simulating the rotation of the Earth

Create a Flash movie in Adobe Captivate using Google Earth.

  • In Google Earth, select View>Grid. This will display the prime meridians.

  • Using the Sunlight feature on Google Earth, zoom out from Earth.

  • Select the time slider button.

  • Drag the arrow from the time slider back two days.

  • Open Adobe Captivate.

  • Select Software simulation.

  • Select Settings>Modes.

  • Uncheck Text captions and Mouse movements.

  • Record a simulation of the rotation of the Earth over two days.
