Syllabus bites Exploring Asia-related texts

Asia-related texts

What are Asia-related texts?

globe of the world showing Asia and Australia

These are texts that are created by Asian or Asian-Australian composers about Asia or their experiences as Asian Australians. The texts may also be about Asia by non-Asian composers.

The inclusion of Asia-related texts addresses the cross curriculum priority of Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia.

The video English, Asia literacy and the Australian Curriculum explains how Asia-related texts can be incorporated into English lessons.

What is Asia?

Defining the countries of Asia may create some discussion. Which countries do students think are part of Asia? After looking at a map of Asia, would they add any countries to their list? Students could play a game to check their knowledge.

The Asia Education Foundation has developed lists of texts for Years 7 and 8 (.pdf 311kB) and Years 9 and 10 (.pdf 266kB), and units of work with an Asian focus that are aligned to the Australian curriculum. These are useful to support NSW syllabuses for the Australian curriculum.
