Collect plastic materials that would usually become rubbish and make an artwork using these. Your work should have an environmental message, as John Dahlsen’s work has, and the material that you choose should contribute to this message. You might:
-
use one type of material or object only
-
use shades of one colour only
-
repeat shapes
-
use one shape only.
Look again at Sacred Sites II and find situations where Allen has:
-
zoomed in close to objects
-
zoomed out for more distant views of objects
-
repeated images
-
flipped images
-
rotated images
-
layered images.
Choose a site that is sacred to you, or that you think should be featured, to:
-
show its beauty or importance
-
draw attention to its environmental issues and /or
-
encourage its preservation for future generations.
Photograph your site and work through the preparation and artmaking instructions to create a photographic montage
Write a short artist’s statement that includes:
-
title of the work
-
a description of the materials used
-
a statement about the message that you wish to communicate.
Exhibit your artwork and your artist’s statement on a class blog.
Talk to your teacher and/or class members about whether you think artworks can effectively communicate a message about the environment? Why do you think this?
