Cooma North Public School is connected and ready!

On May 21, Member for Monaro and Deputy Premier, John Barilaro MP and Assistant Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell MLC visited Cooma North Public School. The school was one of the first to receive upgraded wireless connectivity and experience the innovative learning tools coming soon to NSW public schools.

The $70M Connecting County Schools (CCS) project brings wireless access to more than 13,000 learning spaces in over 900 regional and remote schools. The $23M STEMShare project builds on this through greater access to new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning resources and support.

Staff and students from Cooma North PS and neighbouring schools in the CCS project, participated in an event to showcase their upgraded Wi-Fi and the exciting new STEMShare equipment. Students enthusiastically participated in Space and Astronomy themed activities linked to their study of Science in Stage 3. They worked with Robotics, Virtual Reality, 3D Printing, Filming Technology, and Connected Systems - preparing them for their lives ahead in the digital age.

The ITD team would like to thank Cooma North PS for their hospitality, enthusiasm and ideas - all making for a fun and informative day!

Dudley Public School using Double – NBN News

Dudley Public School's telepresence robot in action

Being chronically ill and unable to attend school can be an isolating experience for children. But a high-tech approach is now giving these children a way to attend their regular classes without leaving their home - or hospital bed. The T4L Innovations team worked together with Amy Wilson from John Hunter Hospital School, Kate Sullivan from Dudley Public School, Chris Cividino from Callaghan College and the local Schools ICT Support team to make the Double Telepresence robot available to a student so he can attend his school remotely.

When Sam is unable to attend school, he takes control of the Double, which the school has affectionately named "Danny". Danny stays at school, connected to the department Wi-Fi. Sam uses his laptop to drive Danny around the school, see and hear what's going on and participate in lessons and activities. Recently, NBN News ran this television news story about Sam, Danny and Dudley Public School.

Minecraft Education Edition @Chatswood Public School

Chatswood Public School was one of many involved in the Minecraft Education Edition (MEE) Early Access Program. With the assistance of these participating schools, ITD and Microsoft were able to identify issues and develop a solution to make MEE available to all schools from term 3. However, as well as troubleshooting, we have been astounded by the great educational benefits that quickly became apparent as students engaged with MEE.

Jung Koo volunteered to drive the implementation of MEE at Chatswood PS and applied for 180 licences as a trial for six classes, from years 1 through 6. The six teachers met a few times during term 1 to discuss ideas and share resources. Three stage 2 classes decided to work together for their Science unit. "Students' response to MEE has been overwhelmingly positive!", Jung reported. "They are always asking when the class will be using MEE next. They become immersed when they are using it, it's hard to get them off!"

One benefit found is that MEE helps with differentiation. Depending on the task, no two students will design something in an identical manner. Some might use command blocks, some might use redstone, and some might just use the building blocks provided. Jung said, "It also encourages peer mentoring as they are always more than happy to offer advice to help each other out". One important aspect to consider as teachers, is managing appropriate screen time. Jung advised that "...expectations from your students will shoot through the roof!", so there will be some challenges to overcome. "To balance their activities, I try to have the MEE sessions just before a break time like Recess or Lunch. Also, after the break period, I would do something outside to get the energy flowing and have them ready to go back into the classroom". Jung also ensured the use of MEE was tied to a specific project.

"At our school, every class does an activity to commemorate ANZAC Day, and each is compiled into one video presentation. Since our class was using MEE, I thought of using it for our class' ANZAC Day activity this year. I happened to find a map for a self-guided tour of the Commemorative Walk, so I used that to make a rough template. After that, it was all the children. They made the magic happen in a virtual realm. As well as recreating it, students could interact with their creation, it's not just a virtual tour where a camera guides you - they control their avatars and look around". You must watch the video below to see how the students rebuilt ANZAC Parade in Canberra in Minecraft.

Many of the other schools that participated in the MEE Early Access Program also reported enormous levels of engagement across a wide variety of uses in multiple KLAs. Through the program, we are developing so many educational experts across NSW DoE, in both Minecraft itself and in implementing MEE in the classroom. If you can think it, chances are someone out there has either already done it, or can help you execute it. The Early Access Program has been a great springboard for the department to help other schools to effectively join in from the start of term 3. Information Technology Directorate looks forward to announcing the process that schools will follow to get MEE happening with their classes. Make sure you check out news.T4L in week 9 for more details!

Schools and "Skype for Business" meetings

The relocation of the department’s corporate staff to the new building in Parramatta has commenced. The new site will extensively use the Skype for Business communication tool for video and web conferencing. School-based staff may start receiving invitations to attend Skype for Business meetings and VC sessions.

Schools will be able to participate in these meetings using their existing Tandberg or Polycom video conferencing (Connected Classroom) systems. Instead of the regular 6000 number, a conference number (Conference ID) will be included in the invitation email. If you wish to join via telephone (audio only), dial the phone number provided and enter the Conference ID included in the invite.

Alternatively, staff with access to Skype for Business can simply click on the Join Skype Meeting link included in the invitation, to join automatically. More information about how to use Skype for Business is available here.

Google Photos now enabled for students

Previously, Google Photos in DoE's G Suite was only available for staff. Now it has also been enabled for students (K-12) to help them organise their own photo and video albums.

With unlimited storage, even for super-high quality images, Google Photos will help with quick search/find functions, easy basic photo editing and instant backup from mobile devices using the iOS or Android app.

MS Teams - now with built in instant conferencing!

"Meet Now" in MS Teams

As reported in the previous issue of news.T4L, the new Meet Now option in Microsoft Teams for Education is developing into a game-changer for schools! Already we are seeing the take-up of this great tool that quickly turns a text conversation into a meeting with just a few clicks. Add audio, video, and share your screen with Meet Now.

If you use a desktop PC, just add one of the Logitech webcams available in the DoE Online Catalogue and pair it with a decent headset/mic. Or go mobile on a laptop, or use the Teams app on a handheld device!

Apple buy-back and
e-waste recycling

As part of the department's commitment to reducing e-waste within schools, we’re making recycling easier. We're also interested in helping schools access the potential residual value in your older devices.

NSW DoE has worked with Apple to launch two programs:

Did you know that you can return your old iPads for their residual value through the Apple buy-back program? Get an instant, online assessment of the value of your devices through either BrightStar or CompNow. Following assessment, the agreed value is returned to the school by cheque or electronic funds transfer.

Recycle your old equipment

Does your school have old monitors, PCs or printers cluttering storerooms? To recycle all other e-waste, you can book in for free pick up and recycling. No purchase is required. These devices will be recycled locally and repurposed to reduce the need for mining precious metals. Sorry, NO UPS, projectors, TVs or copiers. You can read more about Apple’s commitment to recycling and the environment.

  • Windows Workloads
  • Web & Cloud Workloads
  • Mobile & Gaming Workloads
  • Other Toolsets Workloads

Alternatively, a single package which includes all four workloads can be deployed. Please take careful note of the licence terms listed in Software Catalogue against each Visual Studio entry.
