Schools Digital Strategy News item

The future of education will see students learn on their own terms, and their education will be personalised and flexible. Their teachers will be given the career support, skills, and resources they need to deliver a richer learning experience. The Schools Digital Strategy (SDS) includes our three-step plan to deliver a customer-centric, responsive, efficient, and seamless education experience. To bring this strategy to reality, we're capturing the voice of schools, sharing strategy and implementation resources, and most importantly, including you. Yammer will be used as our two-way communications platform to help everyone understand and contribute to ongoing development of the SDS. So please come join the Schools Digital Strategy Yammer group (remember to click Join!) where you can find out more about the SDS, ask questions and join in the discussions that have already begun. Also, make sure to visit the Schools Digital Strategy website.

NSW DoE bandwidth boost News item

Internet is provided for all of our schools across NSW because we want every single school and student to have access to any learning opportunity, anywhere, anytime. That is ITD's mission. It is this same DNA that drives the core of ITD's telecoms strategy and telecoms vendor management framework. We are working very hard to deliver boosted capacity to our schools. Secured Internet Edge project is one of such enabling initiatives. The amount of bandwidth we deliver today is a huge leap forward from just two years ago, but we won't be stopping here! Our vision is to be Australia's best education system and one of the finest in the world.

NSW DoE internet capacity keeps improving

MS Office change in Macros feature News item

The Macros feature in MS Office programs offers convenient ways to perform regular functions efficiently. Unfortunately, this feature is also misused by people trying to exploit users and gain access to department systems. Malicious macros could be in MS Office files and documents received as attachments, or downloaded from the internet. They can install malware onto your computer, or spread it across the entire organisation. To reduce this risk, Microsoft has recommended that macros be disabled in MS Office's default settings. This will result in a security alert appearing in the ribbon, if macros are detected in a document or file. The user can choose to enable macros on a case-by-case basis. It is important to never enable macro content to run if you do not trust where it came from and are not expecting the alert in your MS Office program. The new security warnings will appear from Monday 9 March, 2020.

Macros in MS Office files will be disabled from 9 February. Users can choose to enable them on a case by case basis.

New eSafety Toolkit for schools Link item

We know the safety and wellbeing of students has always been a core concern for schools, and the internet makes the task more challenging. The eSafety Toolkit for Schools is a suite of free resources that support primary and secondary schools to create safer online environments. The resources are backed by evidence and research into best practice in online safety education and are designed to reduce the likelihood of – and effectively respond toonline safety issues in schools. The Toolkit was developed in response to recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which highlighted technology’s significant role in many contemporary child safety issues. It also fulfils an action from the Education Council’s 2018 work program to address bullying and cyberbullying. Designed in collaboration with all Australian education sectors, the Toolkit seeks to support and supplement what schools are already doing to support online safety. We strongly recommend NSW public schools to take advantage of these new eSafety resources.

Tech at Terara Public School Peer item

Here in the Technology 4 Learning team and across ITD, we strive to provide schools with the devices, infrastructure, services, access and support, needed to allow teachers to meet today's education expectations. We regularly hear and see how all of these resources can be combined to enrich teaching and learning. It's great when individual schools share their stories, because it provides other schools across NSW with context and an understanding of what's possible, using the same resources available to all schools. Matt Watt, relieving principal of Terara Public School, near Nowra on the south coast, shares his school's story in the video below. Show it to the staff at your school and then capture and tell us your school's story! The 2020 T4L Awards are now open!

One school that did exactly that recently, was Leumeah High School. They took all of their new year 7 students to the Penrith store in groups of thirty, to explore, create and collaborate! Find out about their exciting experience (PDF) and if your school is not too far from an Apple Store, why not book in your class?

Plan your awards entry! Tip item

With last year's T4L Award winners, we all saw the effort and quality of each school's video entry. For the 2020 awards, we've provided schools plenty more time to get their entries just right. Putting together a three minute video might sound easy, but powerfully telling your school's ICT story in just three minutes or less, is not simple at all. That's why we've allowed until the end of May to get your video produced and submitted. So start planning how you'll capture and present the great things happening at your school, in your chosen T4L Awards category. Show us how your school is making a difference to teaching, learning and/or school administration by effectively using technologies with your staff and students.

Jamf School or Jamf Pro? Info item

Both Jamf School (formerly Zuludesk) and Jamf Pro offer tools specific to teachers, schools, and students. Both offer zero-touch deployment and Mobile Device Management (MDM). Both integrate seamlessly with Apple School Manager and Apple Classroom. Both will always support Apple releases and features, on day one. So which should schools be using? NSW DoE's Jamf agreement delivers a Jamf Pro licence with each Apple device ordered via EdBuy. In early 2019, Jamf acquired Zuludesk and rebranded as Jamf School in November. Through the success of the Jamf School reseller network, many NSW public schools are users of Jamf School. If yours is one of these schools and you are happy with the features and service it offers, just continue to use it as your MDM for Apple devices. There’s no need to change! When purchasing new Apple devices from EdBuy, the bundled Jamf Pro licence will be transferred to Jamf School. If you are new to Apple device management, or are not using a supported MDM solution, it's best to take advantage of the Jamf Pro licences. Please visit https://t4l.link/jamf for further information.

Jamf Pro vs Jamf Schoolstem.T4L Immersive VR kits News item

Anwar and Laurens from the stem.T4L team (pictured), along with Daniel and Jessica from the Ultimo field operations team and Walter from Infrastructure Services, recently prepared a whopping 90x stem.T4L Immersive Secondary Virtual Reality (VR) kits for shipping to 45 high schools across NSW! Each kit comes in two cases, and each participating school received two kits. This kit is the newest addition to the stem.T4L learning arsenal and could only have been made possible through the dedication and assistance of multiple teams across all of ITD. The kit currently supports five different VR authoring tools, allowing for an entire class to build, design, simulate, make and share at the same time on school computers, then experience in VR individually! These kits are loaned to each school for two whole terms. If your high school would like to book the kits for terms 3 and 4 this year, you'll need to get in quick.

Adobe SSO change on-hold News item

In October 2018, we advised that changes were planned for Adobe work-at-home options for both DoE staff and students. ITD worked closely with Adobe to prepare single sign-on (SSO) options for Adobe Cloud accounts for each user. It was then determined that the existing enterprise agreement the department has with Adobe does not cover individual cloud accounts. The existing enterprise agreement expires in April 2021. As such, the previous work-at-home arrangements will continue, with access to Adobe Creative Cloud and Elements products through the Kivuto OnTheHub store.

On the Hub by KivutoRenewing your Adobe WAH deal Tip item

Many staff already take advantage of the discounted subscription to access the full Adobe Creative Cloud suite. But as the year runs out, it's important that staff follow the correct procedure for renewing their subscription. To take full advantage of this special price that DoE makes available to staff, please remember to visit the above (Kivuto) website to re-order a new subscription and obtain a new redemption code. That code can then be applied to your Adobe account to renew your subscription for another year. If you choose the option to renew your Adobe subscription from within your Adobe account, you'll be signing up for Adobe's regular pricing. Depending on the subscription option you choose, you may be locked-in at this far higher price. Please advise staff at your school to avoid confusion and excess cost.
