ICT PLUS+ improvements News item

Since we launched ICT PLUS+ in week 3, the updates and improvements have been coming thick and fast, based on user feedback. Release 2.3.4 went live last Friday, wrapping up multiple changes since the initial release, including:

  • AMU Delegation - Staff who have been delegated access for multiple schools will see a school picker in ICT PLUS+
  • Warranty Data Missing - About 5% of devices in Remedy do not have warranty information. ICT PLUS+ showed these as expired. The Warranty chart and column now show these as "warranty data missing", until Remedy is corrected.
  • Age of Model - "Age of device" has been renamed to "age of model", as it reflects the model release date, not device purchase date. "Age of device" is now on our roadmap.
  • Device usage - Please re-check the Usage chart and column. They now better reflect the last use of each device, for Microsoft devices. Google and Apple devices (but not iOS) are shown as “No data available" until further notice.

To keep up to date on new features and improvements as well as adding your own suggestions, join the ICT PLUS+ group on Yammer. Remember, ICT PLUS+ works best in Chrome.

Apple Caching Server updates News item

At the end of 2016, Information Technology Directorate (ITD) released a standard method of deploying Apple Caching Servers (ACS) running from a Mac Mini computer. These servers ran on MacOS Sierra (10.12) and more than 800 were installed by schools across NSW. From term 2 this year, a new solution was developed to cater for the newest model of Mac Mini that Apple released. The new solution is built on MacOS Mojave (10.14) with centralised management via Jamf Pro. ITD is now remotely updating all of the old ACSs from Sierra to Mojave and enrolling them into the department’s Jamf Pro mobile device management system. It's occurring progressively across the state, with between 20 and 40 servers completed each night. The last servers should be updated by Friday 4 October. There is no outage associated with the update.

Dropbox client removal News item

In our previous issue, we raised security concerns around the use of Dropbox in NSW public schools and corporate offices. The department's Information Security Unit advised that all DoE staff cease to use Dropbox with their DoE email account. In addition, all instances of the Dropbox client on department managed devices will be remotely unistalled from the week of 21 October 2019. This will not affect any data you may have stored on Dropbox cloud servers, but will stop local syncing. It is strongly recommended that staff take advantage of DoE-supported cloud storage:

  • School based staff can choose either MS OneDrive / SharePoint or Google Drive / Team Drives
  • Corporate staff should use OneDrive / SharePoint

Dropbox will automatically be uninstalled from all dept-managed Windows devices from 21 October

Bridgit to be decommissioned Info item

Bridgit, the department's legacy web conferencing software is often used for sharing screens across video conferences. Compatibility problems with Windows 10 and no vendor support for our version, makes the service unsustainable. As a result, ITD is planning to decommission Bridgit on Tuesday, 8 October. If you or your staff are still actively using the Bridgit service, it's time to learn how to use one of many alternatives:

Minecraft, PBL and Kingscliff PS Peer item

We're always hearing of great ways schools have been using Minecraft Education Edition to engage and stimulate their students' learning. Recently, Mark Wallace, a stage 3 teacher at Kingsgcliff Public School on the north coast, shared some of the ideas his 5/6 class came up with. They'd been using MEE since early 2018 and linked it to their Alice in Wonderland text, recreating scenes from the book. During NAIDOC week, they recreated the poster, discussing what the different elements represented. But with their whole school being rebuilt next year, they are following the construction progress in Minecraft, while at the same time creating updated Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) resources. These will help students understand their changing school environment, keep safe and follow rules. Here is the second video in their series so far:

To make the video, Mark hosted the MEE world on his iPad and screen recorded to capture the scenes. They then edited using Wevideo. The students are exposed to a variety of technologies and worked together to produce the desired results. They are now identifying other ways that MEE can be used in class to support and reinforce their learning.

Windows 10 v1809: next Tuesday! News item

Following extensive development, testing and piloting in twelve schools, we'll release Windows 10 version 1809 to all eT4L schools on 24 September 2019. Schools can selectively install the new Windows 10 when they are ready - to some, or all of their DoE standard devices.  Upgrading to v1809 requires a rebuild of each device.  It can either be started by the regular F12 boot process, or remotely using UDM – as long as the device is connected to a working network port via cable.  You can update any existing Windows 10 or 7 device using either of these two methods.  Brand new devices including those from the upcoming T4L Rollout, will be built to Win 10 v1809 via F12. NOTE: v1709 will only remain an option until 28 October 2019.

Windows 10 1809 available via eT4L rebuild from 24 September!

What comes with Win 10 v1809? News item

Some schools indicated that they'd like to use the October holidays to get started with 1809 rebuilds. But before you jump right into it, there are some changes you should know about:

  • MS Office 2019 is included in 1809 with 3D features enabled! NOTE: The Office 2019 installer via UDM for 1709 devices will be released during term 4.
  • OneNote is now part of Windows, not Office.
  • The OneDrive next-gen sync client is included, but not enforced. Staff will be able to decide if they want it running and what to sync - including MS Teams file shares!
  • Adobe Acrobat DC has been replaced by Adobe Reader DC, since most users do not publish PDF content. The full Acrobat DC can be deployed via UDM where required.

With these changes, the 1809 build is smaller and quicker to deploy. We know you'll enjoy Windows 10 v1809!

How are we all going with Win 7? Info item

Back in week 6 of term 2, we published an anonymous table of the big users of Windows 7 devices. At that time, there were almost 50,000 devices in the DoE network still running Windows 7, with two high schools having more than 300 devices with this old operating system. Fast forward three months and the landscape has changed. Right now, we have just under 20,000 devices with Windows 7, representing less than 5% of our entire Windows fleet. The school that had the most Win 7 computers (382), now has only 133 left and has dropped to fourth place on that table. What an incredible effort, but we all still have a way to go. How many Windows 7 computers are still running at your school? 13 of our schools have more than 100! It's time to put your school's upgrade plan in action. Locate any and all remaining Windows 7 devices and confirm when exactly each one will be either F12-rebuilt or removed from the DoE network. From next Monday, jump straight to Win 10 v1809! They all must go.

Windows 7 - F12 it or eWaste it.Chrome is now eT4L Tier 1 News item

As part of the regular maintenance by ITD of the fleet of eT4L-built Windows desktops, laptops and tablets in schools, the next cycle of Tier 1 application updates is scheduled to be automatically deployed. The Tier 1 applications that will be upgraded in this cycle include:

  • Adobe Acrobat DC - 19.012.20036
  • Adobe Flash Player - 32.0.0.238

In addition, Google Chrome browser has been promoted to a Tier 1 application. This means that Chrome will be deployed as part of all future F12 builds of devices. Existing UDM installs of Chrome will be automatically updated as part of this Tier 1 update. The version of Chrome to be deployed is 76.0.3809.132. No action is required on the part of the school as all updates are delivered in the background. The deployment is scheduled to commence on Monday 23 September and will be progressively applied to all eT4L Windows PCs on the network.

Google Chrome browser will be a standard app added to eT4L devices.
