Staff user logon changes News item

Key dates have been confirmed for the changes coming as part of the Single sign-on (SSO) and User Logon Experience project. As previously advised, an important change for staff logon will soon occur, to simplify and minimise the need for multiple logons. The logon details for staff will change to use their DoE email address (eg Joe.Bloggs2@det.nsw.edu.au) as their username when starting their managed Windows devices.

  • Friday 16 August - SSO will be enabled
  • Friday 23 August - Weekend system outage starts at 6pm
  • Monday 26 August - All DoE staff must use their email address to logon to managed Windows devices

As these dates draw nearer, we'll update you on how the changes will affect unmanaged devices and BYODs. Updates will also be posted on the project website. Students are not affected and there will be no change to the way students log on to services. Please alert all staff about these changes.

Windows 7 and Office 2010 News item

The user logon changes referred to above will also impact any remaining eT4L Windows 7 with Office 2010 devices in your school. It's critical that all of these devices are rebuilt to Windows 10 or removed from the network, prior to 26 August 2019. Statewide, the fleet of Windows 7 devices has dropped by more than one-third in just one term. At this time last term, the figure stood at 75,000. Today, it's under 50,000 - but we've still got some way to go. Almost 50 of our high schools each have more than 100 Windows 7 devices still on their network and now need to act on this as a priority. Some schools have well over 200 of these devices still running!

Digital Citizenship in DoE Link item

The department's Digital Citizenship website has been completely updated and revamped! It's designed to help students, staff and parents understand and develop the attitude, skills, knowledge and behaviours they need to actively participate in a digital society. Focusing more on a positively framed strategy, we aim to equip and empower users to minimise the risks and maximise the opportunities in our digital future. We’ve partnered with leading researchers to produce a curated toolkit that teachers can share with their students and guide them through important concepts including:

  • Managing their privacy settings in social media
  • Collaborating online and avoiding scams and hoaxes
  • Understanding the law when it comes to online speech
  • Internet banking, shopping online and much more

Please share the above link with your students and parents to help promote the importance of digital citizenship.

Practical uses of MEE in class Tip item

Microsoft recently published three quick videos to provide schools with examples of how Minecraft Education Edition can be applied in the classroom. Covering all ages, these videos will show you how easy it is to link game-based learning with actual lessons covering the science of light, exploring food chains and simulating trade and industry. How have you been using MEE in class with your students? Why not share your ideas in the Minecraft group on Yammer?

Our new portals have landed News item

As announced at the end of last term, the first cohort of schools were switched over to the new staff and student portals last week. They will have parallel access to both the current and the new portals for a transition period until 2 August. This allows users time to get familiar with the new portal. After this transition period, only the new portal will be available. It's mobile-responsive and accessible, with familiar features. For more information and updates and to check the schedule for your school, visit our Digital experience projects page. All schools are expected to have access by the end of week 8. NOTE: Any customisations made to your old portal after you have access to your new portal, will not be migrated.

Hangout with Google's Edu team! Tip item

The Google Education team have been closely supporting NSW public schools in the use of G Suite and Chromebooks through ITD's events and their own Google Summits. They understand it's not always possible for teachers to get to these events, but still want to make themselves available to offer face-to-face support and advice. Do you or your staff have any questions about the use of G Suite, including Google Classroom, Drive, Team Drives, Docs and their other G educational apps? Or maybe you're not sure about whether Chromebooks are right for your school? Lock in 3:00pm on Thursday 13 June when the Google Education team will be hosting a Google Hangout. Anyone can jump on and ask all kinds of Googley-questions and get them answered. Two more Q&A sessions are booked for 4 July and 1 August. It's best to use a laptop with a webcam and if you have one, a USB headset/mic. Use the Chrome browser and head to https://T4L.link/google from 3pm! If you have any questions about these sessions, just email GoogleEDU-AU@google.com.

Schedule a meeting in Teams Tip item

Microsoft Teams is a powerful collaboration platform used across NSW DoE for both staff in schools and corporate offices and students in classrooms. As well as hosting on-line group discussions and file repositories, it also includes reliable and effective "Meet Now" functionality. This allows team members to quickly connect online through live voice and video conferencing. But what if your don't want to "Meet Now"? How can you schedule a meeting and invite team members to join in at a later date and time? This quick video below will guide you through this simple process. While you can use a laptop with its built-in microphone and speakers, it's best to use a USB headset/mic for any web conference needs. Just search the DoE Catalogue for a USB headset for options. It's best to get one labelled as "Skype Certified".

Deploy Minecraft EE via UDM! News item

In our previous issue, we advised that Microsoft have released a desktop version of Minecraft Education Edition for Windows. We are very pleased to announce that this has now been packaged and added to the eT4L Software Catalogue. You can now request this for your school and approve its inclusion in your school's UDM. This will provide an alternative option to deploy and install the app more easily, ready for use by all users of your targeted computers that have been updated to Windows 10 1709. You still need to have licences for each student and staff member, to be able to sign into and use Minecraft Education Edition. If you have not already arranged these licences, please visit the DoE Minecraft Intranet Site.

Minecraft Education Edition can now be deployed via UDM!

It's Phishing Season! Tip item

As we draw closer to the end of the financial year, we are likely to see more phishing emails in our inboxes. Everybody needs to know how to spot a scam. Your bank, or any authority won't email you with a link to sign in. Check who the sender is and what their email address is. Check where links go by hovering over them to see the real URL. Check the language used. Be vigilant and be safe - and DON'T GET HOOKED.
