The Board of Studies NSW Syllabus for the Australian curriculum in Science K-10 prescribes research in how Indigenous knowledge is being used in decisions to care for country and place in Stage 5 Knowledge and Understanding, Living World strand.

A student:

  • explains how biological understanding has advanced through scientific discoveries, technological developments and the needs of society SC5-15LW

LW2 Conserving and maintaining the quality and sustainability of the environment requires scientific understanding of interactions within, the cycling of matter and the flow of energy through ecosystems

f. assess ways that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s cultural practices and knowledge of the environment contribute to the conservation and management of sustainable ecosystems

Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander traditional knowledge and/or cultural practices have been identified and their contribution to both conservation and management of a sustainable ecosystem has been explained. Annotated bibliography reflects a range of valid and reliable resources have been accessed.

Part B. Contribution of traditional knowledge and cultural practices of both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples towards the conservation and management of sustainable ecosystems has been identified and explained. Assessment of the value of the contributions has been made and justified.

Part A. Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander traditional knowledge and/or cultural practices have been identified and their contribution to conservation or management of a sustainable ecosystem has been explained. Annotated bibliography reflects valid and reliable resources have been accessed.
