More on FijiThe political situation remained unresolved in early 2010 and the rule of law continued to be ignored. On 4 November 2009, Fiji expelled the Australian High Commissioner. In April 2009 Fiji’s Constitution was abolished by Commander Bainimarama. During this period Fiji was ruled by decree, including a set of Public Emergency Regulations, giving the police and military extensive powers. The protections and rights normally given to people were undermined. This was the fourth time in 20 years that Fiji has suffered from a coup. Further reading |
