Frederick Brightfield’s embarkation

Frederick Brightfield was in the 1st Field Company Engineers. His enlistment date places him in the second record for the 9th Reinforcements, who left Melbourne 16 October 1915 on HMAT Port Lincoln. Note his service record had the embarkation date 15 October 1915.

We learn also that Frederick was part of a group of 35 NSW men, most from Sydney. The group included Sapper (Spr) William Thompson (pictured) from Double Bay, the McBride brothers from Ryde, and the three Potts brothers from Narrabri, with the oldest Potts brother as the Acting Lance Corporal.

Spr Thompson enlisted on 14 August 1915 and embarked Melbourne aboard HMAT Port Lincoln on 16 October 1915. He received gunshot wounds to his back at Bapaume, France, and died on 2 November 1916 aged 21 years.
