School to Work Program: 2018 State Report
It is now time to complete your School to Work Report!

Go to your portal and in 'My Applications' find 'School to Work Report 2018'. There are instructions available and you also have access to past reports. So go ahead and start collating your data and write your report. It is a good tool to reflect on your School to Work program and consider what worked well and what needs improvement. It is also important for us in state office to showcase the impact of the program and help ensure future funding.

The 2018 Beyond School Study Guide has been developed by the Australian Government as a resource to assist year 10-12 students explore types of study they can undertake to achieve their career goals and the types of financial assistance they may be able to access.

2018 Rural and Remote Career Education K-12 Symposiums
The Symposiums were held in Tamworth and Wagga Wagga.  Representatives from over 22 schools attended the Symposiums. Evaluations indicated a high level of engagement and learning from listening to the lead schools sharing their creative and innovative career education K-12 programs.

Throughout the project all participating schools were given access to customised project planning tools to assist in the coordination and implementation of careers projects. Since the beginning of the program, schools have had autonomy to prepare, execute and evaluate their independent projects with the support of members from Rural and Distance Education and Senior Pathways.

The lead schools were:
  • Tenterfield High School
  • Coolamon Central School
  • Bowraville Central School
  • Yeoval Central School
  • Ardlethan Central School
  • Young High School.
Participants at both conferences were asked to evaluate the symposium. Here are three quotes:
  • 'Very important; all research supports this initiative - infants and children are already eliminating possible careers-parents are the most influential people in their children's career decision making, so must be involved in the process.'
  • 'Link to curriculum and educate staff about transferable skills and why (it is) important to have these in  future careers (newsletters, classrooms, signs)'.
  • 'Start early on planning and leverage your school community capital'.

Skillsroad 2018 Youth Census Report

Apprenticeship Support Australia  commissioned the largest Youth Census in Australia with over 30,000 youth aged 15-24 . The research was conducted because of concerns regarding rising youth unemployment and a range of evident changes in today’s workforce.

The information will tell parents, teachers and current or future employers about challenges and concerns youth across Australia are facing. It also addresses wellbeing levels, as well as what this means for our workforce at a bigger scale.

Regional Industry Education Partnerships (RIEP)

Ten dedicated, locally-based RIEP officers will be appointed throughout the network of Training Services NSW regional centres to:

  • build partnerships between employers and local schools
  • support employers to engage with schools and share their expectations for their future workforce
  • help students develop the skills they need to get a job; and
  • strengthen links between what is learned at school and what is needed in the workplace.
