In 2010 the Plastiki boat―made from 12,500 2-litre, reclaimed plastic bottles―sailed from San Francisco to Sydney to take a message to the world about problems caused by plastic bottles. This is particularly an issue for our oceans and marine biology. David de Rothschild, the Plastiki expedition leader, says that the Plastiki project was about ‘taking a symbol of dumb plastic 1.0―the single use throwaway kind―and making it functional’.

Hear David de Rothschild1 speak about the expedition with members of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Why do you think David de Rothschild called single-use plastic ‘dumb plastic’?

Tell family or class members and your teacher about the expedition that you researched.
