To implement Photo Voice in your classroom:

  1. Organise a member from each group and the teacher to take photos of students as they engage in the learning activities in the resource. The photos should capture good learning as it happens. You might rotate students so that several will get a turn as photographer.

  2. Brief the photographers to take photographs when they consider that good learning is happening in their own group or other groups, individually or as a class. You might discuss with students what good learning could look like. Consider:

    • sharing tasks fairly and responsibly

    • organisation

    • motivation, trying new ideas and taking safe risks

    • involvement

    • enjoyment and enthusiasm

    • communicating and presenting information effectively

    • listening to others

    • helping each other

    • working collaboratively to address the goals

    • excellent products.

  3. At regular intervals (perhaps weekly) the photographers, including the teacher, select a small number of photos (perhaps three or four) that best represent good learning. They explain to the class why they chose these photos and why they best represent good learning. Guide student with questions such as:

    • Why did you choose these photos?

    • What do they tell about the work we have done?

    • What do they show about the learning and student engagement?

    • What do they show about how your group/class worked together?

    • What do they tell you about how the class used technology?
