Staff user logon - it's changing! News item

The User Logon Experience project is in full swing! As all DoE staff prepare for the change to signing-on with our DoE email address from 26 August, don't forget that Single Sign-On (SSO) is also coming! From Friday, 16 August, SSO will be enabled. But what does that mean? SSO simplifies the user logon process significantly. Once you successfully sign onto your eT4L-built (managed) device, your secured device credentials will automatically be used authenticate to virtually all corporate services and applications, including:

  • Student and Staff DoE Portals
  • G Suite / Office 365 cloud services
  • Employee Self-Service and other corporate applications
  • SAP / ebs: central / Oliver

Even if any of these sessions expire or even if you logout of these applications, your managed device credentials will automatically be re-applied if/when you want to go back into them – until you logout or shut down your device.

SSO and YOUR data security News item

While SSO is very convenient, it brings user security considerations with it. One logon will allow direct access to many of your apps and services, which previously prompted for your credentials. Once a device is logged on, anyone who subsequently uses it will be able to access any and all of the above apps and services as if they were you. It will become extremely important for the security of your email, corporate data and even your personal files stored in cloud services, that you either LOGOUT or manually LOCK your device - BEFORE walking away. Leaving a logged-on device unlocked, will potentially expose all of the above (and more) to anyone that wanders past. This preventative action on the part of the user (staff and students), will require security awareness-raising for everyone at your school in the lead-up to this change.

Windows 7 - Time to get serious News item

The user logon changes referred to above will also impact any remaining eT4L Windows 7 with Office 2010 devices in your school. It's critical that all of these devices are rebuilt to Windows 10 or removed from the network, prior to 26 August 2019. Statewide, there are still just over 40,000 left running this old operating system - but we've still got some way to go. Our Windows 10 device count now sits at more than 325,000 - still the largest in the entire Asia-Pacific region! With two weeks of this term to go and only five weeks of term 3 available to upgrade these old devices, it's time to put your school's plan in action. Locate any and all WIndows 7 devices and confirm when exactly each one will be either F12-rebuilt or removed from the DoE network.

If your Windows Start button looks like this, you need to update very soon!

Internet Edge: All systems go! News item

Following an extended pilot where the solution was thoroughly tested and carefully tweaked, the rollout of a new internet service to schools is about to begin! The Secured Internet Edge project for schools will provide faster internet to schools, with greater scalability to support evolving IT-enabled learning initiatives. It will also deliver increased network capacity for accessing DoE corporate applications and services. Starting with our 730 largest schools from term 3 this year, the aim is to deliver bandwidth of 1Mbps per student by 2020 and up to 5Mbps per student by 2025. We know this exciting new internet service will bring a seamless, enhanced user experience to students and teaching staff on DoE managed devices. For BYOD and other non-managed devices, there is a minor change to the internet logon process. Schools involved will be directly contacted as their cut over is scheduled.

Manage Apple devices with Jamf! News item

The NSW Department of Education in conjunction with Apple, have arranged an enterprise agreement for the provision of Jamf Pro for mobile device management (MDM) services for iPad, Mac and Apple TV devices. The agreement delivers:

  • 4-year subscriptions with each new Apple iPad and Apple Mac or Macbook
  • subscriptions available at more-affordable enterprise rates for any existing compatible Apple devices in schools
  • a separate instance of Jamf Pro for each school to allow for independent local MDM functions
  • centralised management for core DoE network settings
  • local technical support in the use of Jamf Pro

Some schools have already cut across to Jamf Pro to provide easy, over-the-air management of their fleet of Apple devices. From the start of term 3, all other schools will be able to establish their own Jamf Pro instance and start managing their fleet more effectively. We've prepared this new fact sheet and will be contacting schools with Apple Caching Servers directly to advise them of their options. Stay tuned for more updates about this exciting new development!

Jamf Pro is now the DoE standard MDM for Apple devices!

Base and Intermediate laptops News item

Production increases have finally seen relief for the long running worldwide Intel chip shortage with all vendors refilling stocks. In particular, the unavailability of processors for our base and intermediate laptops meant schools were unable to purchase devices in these two most-popular categories. With Acer's launch, we now have access to stocks ready for order right now with one base model and two intermediate models to choose from on the DoE Standard Devices page. And from early term three, that choice will grow even more!

Base and intermediate notebooks are back!

School Counsellor tech update News item

Members of the School Counselling service have been busy purchasing new computer devices as part of phase 1 of Project OSCROnline Student Counselling Records. New mobile personal computing devices will be deployed to around 1,500 school counselling staff across NSW. When these members receive their new computers, they will need to be imaged via their school’s eT4L server. The school’s ICT Coordinator normally completes this process for any new computers that arrive at the school. Please ensure the devices are 'F12-built’. If the school doesn’t have an ICT Coordinator, or someone who can assist with this process, then a support call should be logged with EDConnect. Just request the local ICT support team come to the school to complete this F12 process for the new device. Log a call via the online form or by phoning 1300 32 32 32 > option 5 > option 4. You cannot logon and use your device until this imaging step has been completed.

Adobe work-at-home changes Info item

It was anticipated that federated logon for Adobe accounts using DoE credentials would be finalised earlier this year, as previously advised. Adobe have been working closely with us throughout this time to address issues uncovered during testing. We are now very close to fully transitioning to the new single sign-on service. This means that both students and staff will be able to use Adobe Creative Cloud at home and on BYODs, without requiring an annual redemption code from Kivuto. They simply authenticate via their DoE email address, which will redirect them to the DoE sign on screen to authenticate for their Adobe Cloud account. We are however in a transition period, which means that users are unable to apply new Kivuto redemption codes that they may have obtained. A further update with more details will be provided in the first issue of news.T4L next term.

FREE work-at-home is coming for Adobe Creative Cloud.
