Zita Wallace was a young child when she was taken from her family and moved to a mission near Alice Springs. At the age of forty-two, she returned to her grandfather’s land to find her mother. Two video clips, from the documentary Beyond Sorry, detail Zita returning to her family and culture, and then learning the ways of her people.

Zita Wallace gave evidence for the inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. As such, her story also appears in the Bringing them Home report.

Use audio/visual software to record a message to Zita. Your message should be a response to Zita’s life as a member of the Stolen Generations. Imagine how you would feel in her situation, and what you would do.

Share your completed message with your class. Discuss the responses you presented. Were they similar or different? Why?

For further information read the transcript of an interview Zita Wallace gave on ABC.
