Standardised.Logon: complete News item

On Monday, 17 August, all school staff started using their full email address to logon to DoE computers and into any DoE application where you are prompted for user credentials. While this may not seem a benefit to some staff, it is a major milestone for future projects, which include delivering more applications and larger mailboxes via Office 365. It should be noted that Standardised.Logon does not deliver single sign-on functionality, but it is the first step toward the launch of Streamlined.Logon. Click the image below and read the next article for a brief description and timeline for Streamlined.Logon.

What is Streamlined.Logon? News item

One frustration for staff and students at schools, is the number of times that they need to enter their user credentials throughout the day. Streamlined.Logon will remove this annoyance for staff and students using an eT4L Windows device at school. For almost all services, that means no separate logon is required! This will bring signficant time savings for every teacher, student and school. All corporate staff and 100 schools are participating in a pilot this month. We’re looking forward to announcing the launch to all schools later this year. Watch this video to see Streamlined.Logon in action.

Students from Stage 2 at Central Tilba Public School, on the NSW south coast, shared their story about their visit to Bournda Environmental Education Centre a few weeks ago. They were participating in the centre's Digital Forests program. During this program, students used iPads to learn methods and techniques of digital photography, photo editing and visual text construction. They used their observation skills and took photos in three environments: amongst the eucalypts, by the lake and in the melaleuca forest. Using the Book Creator app, they produced some amazing collages through a rich and engaging outdoor lesson. Why not find out what great activities your nearest Environmental Education Centre has to offer?

Along with Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Adobe Connect, Google Meet is a web conferencing service that can be used as part of the department's G Suite for Education service. However, Google Meet is only available for use by school and corporate staff. The service is not currently available for NSW public school students. Meet use is restricted to staff only because required school meeting control settings are not yet available. The department is working with Google to inform the development of these features, with the aim of opening the use of Google Meet with students in the coming months. Look for updates in news.T4L.

Apple: Teaching Code PL item

The Everyone Can Code curriculum guides you through Swift Playgrounds, an app that teaches coding for kids through a world of interactive puzzles and playful characters. Students aged eight and up will grasp the concepts and engage with coding in the same language used by professional app developers. To take the next step, do your students use Mac computers? Apple completely redesigned their Develop in Swift offering, that brings together curriculum for students and free professional learning for educators. And it’s all on Mac, which supports all major programming languages. The new curriculum is aimed at students who are new to coding, or who are pursing a career in app development.

Automatic access to applications News item

We’ve been developing new ways to improve access management for principals, their delegates and staff.  In our last issue, we announced that new starters now gain automatic access to a raft of DoE applications – based on the requirements of their rolewithin 24 hours of starting at a new school.  In the 3 weeks since going live, more than 1,700 Teachers, 150 Principals and 20 SAMs had their access automatically provisioned. This has saved an estimated 460 school hours. The Extended Automatic System Access (EASA) project will be adding more roles for this automated access soon, to further reduce the burden on principals and their delegates.

New web apps to manage access News item

We’ve also developed two modern, mobile apps for requesting and granting access to additional applications. Manage My Access (MMA) and Manage Staff Access (MSA) make it easy for staff to submit requests directly to their principal or delegates on-the-go. The requests can be approved and the access granted, in just a few clicks. MSA is already available to all principals and MMA was recently rolled out to 250 schools. Within the first two days, 55 requests were submitted and 31 granted. MMA will be available to all other schools later in the year. View more information and user guides - with instructions on how to add these time-saving apps to My Essentials on Staff Portal. Watch this quick video for an overview of MMA and MSA.

With its Push Notification alerts, staff are informed of important tasks and can complete them more efficiently while on-the-go! With this app, you can access your Essentials, StaffMail, SchoolBiz and Staff Directory Search from your iOS device and even log in with your thumbprint or Face ID! Why not use Manage My Access and Manage Staff Access through the Staff Portal iOS app and request and grant access via your iPhone? Its intuitive design makes it simple to use, but there is a built-in Help section. And if you need to log a service desk call, choose Contact Us to instantly dial EDConnect by phone. New functionality will be added to the Staff Portal app through updates released to the App Store, to continually improve the experience. An Android version is also in development and will be released soon – visit the Staff Portal App page to keep up-to-date on future releases. Make sure you tell others with iPhones at your school!

Updating old Windows versions Info item

Last term, we advised schools that plans are in place to centrally disable any remaining Windows 7 computers by the end of Term 3, 2020. This means that if your school hasn't rebuilt or removed them from the network by then, they will stop working. Field Operations teams will be identifying all remaining Windows 7 computers and alerting schools wherever they are found. But if you spot any yourself, please rebuild or remove them right away! Here's a simple guide you can follow. Beyond these old Windows 7 devices, there is still a significant number of the oldest version of Windows 10 still in use. The 1607 release is now over four years old and is missing many great features that teachers and students would benefit from. It makes sense to refresh these as well, to take advantage of those benefits and bring your whole fleet of Windows devices up to date.

There are still older versions of Windows running in schools and these need to be updated as soon as possible.

Minecraft: EE now open to all! Info item

We first made Minecraft: Education Edition (M:EE) generally available to any teacher that wanted to use it with their students through a licence request process. Today, we are pleased to announce that M:EE is now open to all users across the department that would like to use it - no extra licence required! The department's M:EE information page has everything you need to help with getting staff and students started. It's a great virtual educational platform, that provides an opportunity for students and teachers to collaborate and create in an immersive environment. What about schools that decide that they don't want students using M:EE at school? Local decisions about technology use apply. M:EE requires the installation of a local app for the devices it runs on. Schools can choose not to make these apps available on school devices.

Minecraft: Education Edition is now open to all NSW DoE students and staff!
