Tertiary pathways for students from refugee backgrounds

Students from refugee backgrounds often need personalised support to understand and navigate their senior school and post school options. In addition students who are seeking asylum in Australia and refugees on temporary visas are not eligible to receive financial assistance for tertiary study, including higher education loans schemes such as FEE-HELP and HECS-HELP and Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP). As a result, many current year 12 asylum seeker and refugee students are unable to access tertiary education when they finish school.

Advice for schools, career advisors and transition advisors has been prepared by the Multicultural Education team in consultation with the Senior Pathways team, around the challenges faced by this group of students, along with strategies and people that can assist these students.

Australian Government Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships

Round 3 of the Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships is now open and will close on 14 June 2019.

The Australian Government committed $58.1 million for the Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships (RRES) Program to assist students from regional and remote Australia to undertake VET, undergraduate and postgraduate studies from Certificate IV to PHD level.

Scholarships are valued at up to $18,000 each and will assist recipients with the cost of study for the duration of their course. $18,000 will be available for a four year full-time course, or eight year part-time course, with pro-rata amounts for shorter courses. Scholarships will be available to students studying on campus, online or through distance education.

Scholarship recipients may also be eligible to receive $500 to undertake an internship and develop professional experience.

Recipients will be selected on the basis of need and merit.

Information about the scholarships and how to apply is located at Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships.

Course Seeker

Course Seeker is a one-stop-shop which provides prospective higher education students with transparent information about Australian higher education admissions, helping them to make important choices regarding their future study options.

Students can explore, select and compare up to four higher education courses nationally. Deciding on a course and where to study can be a daunting experience. With Course Seeker students can narrow down their course options by ATAR, mode of study, study area and location.

This is an Australian Government Department of Education and Training website.

Visit the Course Seeker website at CourseSeeker.edu.au.

Australian government videos to  help you promote VET courses

As part of the VET. It's Right Now campaign, the Australian Department of Education and Training has developed a series of videos to promote VET as a form of training for school leavers. In these videos they challenge Mums' and Dads' knowledge of VET and have stories from students about their success. This would be a good resource to link to your careers page on the school website and promote via the school's social media channels.

Where are the jobs?

Look no further...the Department of Jobs and Small Business carries out research to identify skill shortages in the Australian labour market. The department publishes the results of its research as:
  • state, territory and national overview reports and lists
  • occupational cluster reports (grouping similar occupations)
  • and individual occupational reports.
See the website for skills shortage information that may help with your discussions with students and supporting school career programs.
