Who is at risk? Everyone can be at risk but people with fair skin are at the most risk. They have less melanin in their skin. Their skin is fair and has little protection against ultraviolet radiation. Many Australians have fair skin and this is one reason that skin cancer is so common in Australia. Melanin is a sun protective pigment in skin cells. People with dark skin have high levels of melanin while fair skin has less melanin. Many people in Australia come from countries where there is less sunlight than in Australia. Their skin is fair and has little protection against ultraviolet radiation.
