Types of EMR

Get the info

Here are the seven different types of electromagnetic radiation in order from the highest energy to the lowest energy.

  • Gamma rays come from nuclear explosions and are very damaging to humans.

  • X-rays can also damage humans and cause cancer.

  • Ultraviolet is next in line and can cause damage to your skin and eyes.

  • Next is visible light which is the only part that our eyes can see.

  • Infra-red is what we feel as heat.

  • Microwaves have less energy than infra-red. They are used in microwave ovens and give astronomers information about the galaxy.

  • Radio waves have the least amount of energy and can penetrate the atmosphere.

EMR can be represented by waves. The waves that have a high frequency are the ones that can do damage to us as they a carry a lot of energy.

If the waves are close together we say that they have a high frequency. If they are not close together they are called low frequency. Gamma rays have the highest frequency while radio waves have the lowest frequency
