Cells in the body normally grow and divide in a controlled way. Cancer cells are cells that have got out of control and keep multiplying. They form lumps of cells which are called tumours.

Tumours can be benign and stay within the tissue that they formed in, or malignant and spread to other parts of the body. Malignant tumours are the most dangerous as they will destroy surrounding tissue.
