Biocontrols of bitou bush

Biocontrols are the pests and diseases from the homeland of the weeds. These living things are called biocontrol agents. Here are some photographs of four biocontrols found on bitou in NSW. All of these are from South Africa which is the homeland of bitou bush.

Image 1: Bitou tortoise beetle

Two strange looking insect larvae.

Bitou tortoise beetle was released in 1995 but was not very successful. Very slow to spread and damage is minor.


Image 2: Leaf-roller moth

A caterpillar

Leaf- roller was released in 2000 and has had some success. It is the most damaging pest species of bitou bush in South Africa.


Image 3: Bitou seed fly

A fly with red eyes and black and white lacy wings.

First released in 1996 in 11 locations. Established throughout the range of bitou. Causes significant damage.


Image 4: Tip moth

A white caterpillar and a silvery moth.

First released in 1989 at 74 locations. Established throughout the range of bitou. Causes up to 50% reduction in seed production.
