What's a non-contract Chromebook?
Any Chromebook not purchased through the DoE online catalogue (EdBuy) is a non-contract Chromebook .If schools buy Chromebooks directly from retail suppliers or the school P&C donates Chromebooks purchased elsewhere, these are classified as non-contract Chromebooks.
Is an old computer built with Neverware CloudReady/Google ChromeOS Flex a non-contract Chromebook?
Neverware CloudReady, now called Google ChromeOS Flex is a viable and effective way of re-using older computers as "Chromebooks". Please refer to the Neverware CloudReady or the Google Flex quick reference guide for more information about obtaining CloudReady or Flex and enrolling these devices into the department's Google domain.
Can you enrol a non-contract Chromebook into the DoE Google domain?
Technically, you can enrol any Chromebook into the DoE Google domain. But you really need to understand a few important things first:
- To be enrolled in any Google domain, the Chromebook needs a Chromebook Management Licence (now known as a Google Education Upgrade).
- The DoE Google domain (education.nsw.gov.au) contains a large pool of Chromebook Management Licences.
- Every enrolled Chromebook consumes one of these licences.
- The licences in the pool come from schools buying Chromebooks via DoE online eCatalogue - a licence is included in the price.
- Those licences bought with the new Chromebooks don't go to the school, they go into the pool (domain).
- The licences cost approximately $40 each (one-time cost only).
- When the school that bought contracted Chromebooks eventually gets around to unboxing and enrolling them, the licences they paid for will be consumed.
- If a school, or multiple schools decide to build large numbers ofnon-Contract Chromebooks and then follow the instructions to enrol them in the DoE Google domain, they are effectively taking a CB management licence for each old device - that another school bought and paid for.
- If a school buys non-contract Chromebooks from the cheapest supplier, they typically don't buy the management licence.
- Eventually if enough non-contract Chromebooks are enrolled, the pool of existing licences will be exhausted and schools that paid for their licences will not be able to enrol their contracted Chromebooks.
- ITD monitors CB licencing and enrolments and where it's discovered that licences have been consumed by non-contract models, will be asking for proof of licence ownership.
- If no proof is provided, the non-contract Chromebooks will be un-enrolled and the licences recouped into the pool for contracted Chromebook enrolment.
BEFORE enrolling non-contract Chromebooks into the DoE Google domain...
- Schools that want to use non-contract Chromebooks and enrol them in our domain must purchase a licence for each device first.
- If ordering non-contract Chromebooks, the vendor should also be able to supply Chromebook Management Licences at the same time. The licences should be prepared for the education.nsw.gov.au Google domain. One licence is required per Chromebook.
- If you need to retrospecitvely order licences to cover existing devices, please ensure the licences are prepared for the education.nsw.gov.au Google domain.
- Once you have ordered and paid for your Chromebook Management Licences, you will receive an email from the vendor containing the licence details, including date and time, Reseller PO Number, Domain and Number of Users.
Our school has ordered a licence for each non-contract Chromebook. What now?
- Once you have your management licences and preferably before you enrol your devices, please complete this online form to provide ITD with evidence of the purchase. NOTE - you must be signed into your DoE G Suite account to complete this form.
- A part of completing the form requires the uploading of a screenshot (jpg) of the licence notification email.
- When this has been done, you may follow the normal enrolment instructions.
- NOTE: Licenced and enrolled non-contract Chromebooks will NOT be supported by EDConnect in the event of any issues. If problems arise, please refer to your supplier and/or un-enrol then re-enrol the affected device.
