How to use this resource
The Vaughan Macefield interview and laboratory tour forms part of Science talk, a web-based resource which aims to inspire students and promote the opportunities science, technology and maths-based careers can offer.
This section contains video segments in which neurophysiologist Professor Vaughan Macefield speaks frankly about his work and research interests. Each video has a series of questions or comments as a starting point for student discussion.
Students can develop an awareness of the scientific principles involved in an area of current Australian biological research and its potential impact of the recovery from illness by:
- describing a current area of biological research into the functioning of the human brain and its role in regulating blood pressure (4.5 science)
- considering how areas of current research may affect the recovery of spinal injury and stroke patients (5.5 science; H4 biology)
- relating the structure and function of the brain and nervous system in communication with other human body systems (5.8 science; H9 senior science)

This resource provides opportunities to incorporate the following elements of Quality teaching in NSW public schools by:
