Superconductors are a special class of materials in which the conductivity drops to zero when the material is cooled below a specific critical temperature.

The LHC uses NbTi windings which become superconducting at 10K. This necessitates the use of liquid helium (boiling pt = 268.9^oC = 4.2K) to keep the superconducting electromagnets below their critical temperature.
