Task 2 Persuasive devices

In persuasive writing, the writer uses a range of devices to convince the reader to accept his or her point of view. The use of emotive language is an important element of the persuasive technique. Look at the use of emotive language in a discussion (PDF 491kB) and in two expositions: a letter (PDF 380kB) and an essay PDF 393kB).

  • Take the list of facts on Books or TV that you developed in Task 1. Write a paragraph on each of your points making sure that you include emotive language to convince your reader.

An authoritative tone is also important part of convincing your reader. Read this article to get some tips on how to make your writing more authoritative.

Now look at the paragraphs that you wrote on Books or TV and think about the tone you have used in your writing. Do you need to make it sound more authoritative to convince your reader? Revise your work and make changes where necessary.

  • Write a conclusion.

Make sure your conclusion is convincing and effectively sums up all the arguments that you presented on the topic.

If you are writing a discussion, make sure you make your point of view clear to the reader so that they know whether you think reading books or watching TV is better.
