Work experience opportunities as a surveyor

Surveying is an exciting field of study that will greatly appeal to any students you know who love subjects like maths, geography and IT – and anyone who likes the idea of working outdoors.

Get downloadable resources for careers advisers to help communicate what surveying is and the need for more surveyors.

Students can register for work experience on their website. There is a 2-3 minutes video showcasing a student, Max, talking about his experience. Also, read  Michael's story about why he chose surveying.

Students give their careers the 'Green Light'

Green Light Day 2018 was a great success with 7 partner venues across NSW opening their doors to raise awareness of the jobs available in the transport and logistics industry. Over 250 students were given insight into rail, road and air transport jobs at Fletchers Dubbo, Linfox Parkes, UPS, Woolworths, RAAF, Pacific National and Sydney Trains.

Freight movements are expected to double over the next 20 years, so there will be jobs available in all aspects of the industry.

Senior Pathways sponsors this program run by TAFE NSW and Transport for NSW.

Students from Narromine High School visited Fletchers International Exports at Dubbo.

Granville Boys' barber shop

Granville Boys High School have created a barber shop to teach boys 14-17 years the skills of barbering. The program teaches boys who would otherwise disengage from school and drop out early. The area has a high level of youth unemployment and this program also teaches them the value of customer service, personal grooming and self-respect.

Other groups of students are learning music and music production, the arts and social media and film-making.

The barber shop is creating a lot of buzz within the school.

Inspiring the Future launches their new Primary Futures careers event

Primary Futures was launched in Australia on the 4 May 2018, organised by the Schools Industry Partnership and The Smith Family. It was hosted by Willmot Public School, a small primary school in Mt Druitt.

The main event was a ‘What’s my Line?’ activity. Pupils asked five volunteers questions about their jobs, and then guessed their occupations. The volunteers then left the stage, returning in either uniform or with a prop to reveal their occupation.

Following this big reveal, the volunteers spent time interacting with the children to talk about their job and how their primary school learning was relevant in helping them achieve their career goals.

Girls exploring trades

The SALT team delivered their workshop to Kandos Public School in May.

The following story was written by one of the students:

"On Friday the 18th, the Year 5 and 6 girls learnt how to make a basket with things like drop saws, jigsaws, files and sanding blocks.

It was an exciting event because we got to take something home to show our parents and say that we made it on our own with the guidance of the SALT tradeswomen.

I really loved the idea of having tradeswomen come to the school and teach us girls to broaden our career choices because girls don’t usually think when they are in year five or six that when I grow up I want to be a carpenter, plumber, electrician or a mechanic.

I think that having the tradeswomen come to our school was a good opportunity to learn more about trades and think about being tradeswomen ourselves.

Having the SALT women come and show us how to use the things that they brought was fun and was an awesome way to spend our Friday."
