Roadside remnants are also sometimes degraded by local people gathering firewood to keep themselves warm during the cold New England winter. Taking standing timber removes nest and shelter hollows and opens up the bush to weed invasion. Taking fallen timber removes the habitat of ground dwelling lizards and invertebrates. This in turn removes the food sources of birds such as the tawny frogmouth and the grey butcher bird. It also removes the low perches of birds such as the scarlet and flame robins which perch then pounce on food on the ground.
