More about copyright

Copyright is the system of legal rights that protects original creative works, including text, images, videos and artworks, from unauthorised copying, distribution, alteration and other uses. Every image, audio file or text extract you use in teaching material is subject to copyright.

For copyright issues, questions, problems, and up-to-date information sheets about copyright in schools, go to the NSW Department of Education Copyright Unit webpage (requires DoE logon).

The Australian Government Smartcopying website is a one-stop shop for questions about copying in schools and TAFE, including FAQs and teaching resources.

The Australian Copyright Council provides information and support for Australian artists and content creators.

The Australian Copyright Council also provides free legal advice to educational institutions.

The Copyright Agency administers a copyright licensing system in Australian schools and TAFE. The agency surveys a sample of schools each year to determine a licensing fee. See the Eucational Licences webpage for more information.
