Google G Suite or MS Office 365? Information item

NSW DoE launched both Google's G Suite and Microsoft's Office 365 simultaneously to all staff and students. This happened in Term 1 of 2015, following detailed and rigorous agreements with both vendors around data privacy and security. The department didn't choose between one platform or the other. Both are offered because public schools in NSW need to expose their students to the range of productivity tools that they would encounter in the real world. This is the same reason that schools are able to order devices via the T4L Rollout and make discretionary purchases that support the range of operating systems that they might encounter - including Windows, MacOS, Chrome OS and iOS. The same level of technical support is offered for both G Suite and Office 365. There are no plans to change this in the future, making any decision to settle on one platform or the other, a local school decision. ITD's recommendation to schools is to take advantage of the best that both platforms offer and let your students and teachers decide which is best for their learning.

The status of SMART Notebook Info item

SMART Notebook software (v11.4 only) was licenced in 2011 for use on staff and student computers, both at school and at home. This was at a time when SMARTboards were the most common brand of interactive device being used by schools. Today, schools are using many varied brands and types of interactive devices and SMART Notebook 11.4 may no longer be an effective tool. Most new interactive devices are shipped with software specifically designed for their device. Further, Windows 10 includes an inking feature for marking up pages and Microsoft OneNote 2016 is a powerful notebook-type tool with both desktop and cloud versions. SMART Notebook 11.4 software is still available for use on DoE computers and can be installed via UDM in eT4L schools, however some compatibility issues are appearing with Windows 10 and on newer computers. For home computers, there is no guarantee that this older version of SMART Notebook will work perfectly. Schools or users that wish to upgrade SMART Notebook to the newest version, will need to procure annual subscription licences directly from the authorised SMART vendor at their own cost. NSW DoE has no plans to upgrade its current licence.

Lynda.com for Stage 6 students! News item

All staff in NSW DoE have had free access to Lynda.com for the past year. The dynamic nature of ubiquitous cloud-based services means changes occur more rapidly, as new features are added and old functions are revised. Face-to-face training is far less effective and viable as course material struggles to keep up with system changes. More and more, our students have been taking control of their own self-development in their own interest areas, with just-in-time, self-paced learning via educational YouTube channels. But since 23 August, our stage 6 students (years 11 & 12) have also been given free access to the amazing learning resources at Lynda.com! New HP power PC available News item

A new high-end desktop PC has been added to the DoE Catalogue for discretionary purchase. This device is ideal for Virtual and Mixed Reality and for tasks that require processor and memory-intensive graphics capabilities like CAD, 3D Modelling and Motion Graphics. With 32GB RAM and a very powerful, dedicated video graphics card, the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 Tower is not comparable to the regular HP Base and Advanced desktops that will be provided through the T4L Rollout. Monitors are sold separately.

Tech for students with disabilities Link item

NSW DoE and ITD work closely with our vendors to ensure that ICT devices, services and applications made available to schools are accessible and inclusive. As just one example, Microsoft is committed to accessibility by developing technologies that eliminate barriers for people with disabilities and enable individuals to take full advantage of their capabilities. Microsoft's accessibility resources linked above, will help your staff better understand what's available and how to ensure the content they create is accessible. At Budawang School in the state's south coast, technology forms an important part of every school day and gives many students access to education and communication that would not be possible without it. Click play on Budawang's inspiring video called Equalising education - showing how various ICTs are used to support their students with disabilities.

Google Tour Creator News item

Tour Creator is part of Google's Virtual Reality (VR) offerings and has been enabled for all DoE G Suite users! Tour Creator allows you to build a 360 degree tour across multiple scenes using either existing Google Street View content, or by uploading your own 360 degree content captured with a special camera. You then add informational hotspots to further embellish your tour. Publish your content to Poly, which is a repository of tours and objects. As the STEMShare VR kits start appearing in schools from next term, we can expect to see vast amounts of content being produced using the included 360 degree camera! Or why not get your own camera and start right away? Finally, remember to join us on September 6 for our T4L WatchLIVE session with Google where we'll cover Tour Creator and Google Expeditions!

New MS Teams training resources Link item

Microsoft Teams has had massive take-up across schools and corporate offices since it launched in DoE just before Christmas. While most users have picked up its intuitive design quite easily, there is always a need for simple and practical training resources to support those who would like some guidance. Microsoft recently launched a set of useful self-paced videos to assist teachers to adopt this excellent collaboration tool. Designed with classroom scenarios in mind, each short video provides step-by-step instructions on how to set up your class spaces, manage assignments, spark rich classroom discussions, and more.
