Slippery slope
You have been commissioned to investigate the feasibility of a new ski-lift. You are required to give a presentation to the local organising committee with the details of your assessment.
Use this diagram, possibly annotated, in your presentation. Your spreadsheet from task 1 may be useful in completing this presentation.
The initial plans for the ski-lift include:
-
A docking station at the resort which is 80m above sea level.
-
A cable to a docking station on a hill that is 240m above sea level.
-
Another docking station on the other side of the resort that is 140m above sea level.
-
As an intermediate ski-lift the gradient of each section must be between 0.24 and 0.30.
-
Cable sections longer than 400m are required to have a stabilising tower in place.
-
There is a maximum of 2000m of cable available for the construction.
Be sure that your assessment includes details about:
-
Any assumptions you have made and other aspects that you have considered.
-
The gradient of each section (show calculations).
-
The distance of each section (show calculations).
-
The position and height of any stabilising tower (explain with calculations).
