The statistical process

The statistical process

Statistics is the science of collecting, analysing and interpreting information in order to draw conclusions. Use the webpage Steps In Running A Survey from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and other sources, to write a summary of the statistical process using Microsoft OneNote.

Make notes, using the questions provided as a guide, under the following headings.

  1. Why is it important to consider the overall question?

  2. Why is it important to choose your sample group carefully?

  3. Why would you not use all statistical measures to summarise your data?

  4. Why do you need to consider your audience?

  1. Define the terms ‘census’ and ‘sample survey’. Compare and contrast the advantages of each method of data collection.

  2. Explain the various types of sampling methods.

  1. Discuss the types of variables that are measured.

  2. What is a frequency distribution table? Explain why data is sometimes ‘grouped’?

  3. Discuss the various measures of ‘location’ and ‘spread’ used in summarising data.

  1. Briefly describe the key features of any graph.

  2. Summarise the main types of graphs. Make sure that you include the box and whisker plot from the previous page.

Design a brief checklist to avoid misinterpretation and ensure the accuracy of the data.
