Describe regions in Venn diagrams

Phil and Donna are in different classes. They have each decided to survey their class to find out which students play soccer and which students play volleyball.

Answer the questions below about each of the Venn diagrams.

There is nobody in Phil’s class who plays both soccer and volleyball, so the circles in his diagram do not overlap. Phil hasn’t written the numbers into the diagram yet.

For each of the diagrams below describe what the coloured area represents.

Two circles labelled Soccer and Volleyball in a rectangle; the soccer circle is coloured green.

The coloured area represents the students who play soccer.

The coloured area represents students who do not play soccer.

The coloured area represents students who play either soccer or volleyball, but not both (because the circles do not overlap).

Donna has some classmates who play both soccer and volleyball, so the circles in her Venn diagram overlap. She hasn’t written the numbers into the diagram yet.
