In my art practice, I often animate words and music. I like to think about how words help us communicate with each other, and how they help us define who we are. Sometimes we use words to reflect on the things that influence us, and to tell people what we like and dislike. Using words in these ways helps us to understand who we are in relation to the world around us. Communicating our likes and dislikes can be a way of making friends, or setting ourselves apart from others. But I also ask myself: can words communicate everything about who we are?
In this video, words and phrases float around the screen with swirling coloured circles. These are foods, activities and other things that I remember from my childhood. It is a collection of the things that formed my world when I was young. But the list is not complete. I couldn't possibly fit everything into one list. This makes me wonder how we make decisions about the things that are important to us, and separate them from those that are not.
Hi, my name's Grant Stevens. In the videos I make I often animate words and music. I think a lot about the ways that words help us communicate with each other and help us define who we are. Sometimes we use words to reflect on the things that influence us and to tell people whether we like or dislike them. Communicating this to other people can be a way of making friends. But it can also be a way to set ourselves apart from other people.
When I'm thinking about these things, I often wonder whether words can tell us everything about who we are. The words and phrases that float around on screen in this video are things that I remembered from my childhood. I tried to make a list of all the things that I remembered and all the things I liked when I was a kid.
But, the list isn't complete. I couldn't possibly fit everything into one list. This made me wonder how we make decisions about the things that are important to us and how we separate them from the things that aren't. I hope you enjoy the video.
