• Shaun Gladwell introduces Kickflipper

  • My art is always about the things I love to do: skateboarding, riding my bicycle and dancing. I try to carry out these things in a way that is different to the skateboarding or bicycle riding I see on TV, the Internet, or in books. For me, art is trying to do things differently, and to have fun trying.

  • Sometimes, when I start making an artwork, I ask myself to do something I haven't seen done before, such as: “How can I ride my skateboard without using my feet; and can I record how differently the world looks when I'm doing this?” I have also made artworks that try to explore really beautiful questions like: “How can I make a drawing without using pencils or pens; and could I make a drawing with my skateboard or bicycle?”

  • Hi, my name's Shaun Gladwell and I'm going to talk about a work that I made a few years ago called Kick Flipper Fragments Edit.

  • And basically I make artwork about stuff that I really love. It used to be stuff that I did on the weekend, you know, skateboarding, riding my bike, all kinds of stuff and I also became really interested in what my friends were doing. Some of my friends were doing stuff like Capoeira which is like a Brazilian dance and all kinds of dancing, break dancing and I decided to start filming them. So, what you're gonna see in this video is pretty straightforward, it's myself on a skateboard at the beach.

But I didn't want to just make a video about skateboarding, you know, I wanted to make a video about skateboarding that could be seen as something else. Maybe like a kind of dance and this is something that I always do with my artwork. I always ask myself a kind of question.

How can I skateboard but make it something more than skateboarding. One time I made a skateboard video but with a camera in my hand and I kinda sort of thought, like the video is more like a drawing than just a straight video of skateboarding. So these are the kinds of things that I start off with in my head before I make an artwork. How can I make it sort of special? How can I push this idea of skateboarding or even how can I push the idea of making a video? So I made a video that's in slow motion because I love the idea of stuff being slow, that you can see all the detail and it's very simple, there's no ramps or there's no stuff that you find on the street.

It's very simple, it's just a skateboard and a flat piece of concrete and pretty soon I found out that everyone was walking into the area that I was skateboarding in, which I loved. People with surfboard's under their arms and at one stage even a dog kinda walks into my video and they were all very welcome as part of my project, my video and I hope that like it. Thank you.
