GENERATE - Redesign solutions

Click on the tabs below to complete the two tasks: Sketch ideas and Share designs.

  • The design of learning spaces impacts on learning.

  • We use electricity and other energy sources to make our spaces more comfortable and useful.

  • Our school has many spaces that serve different, sometimes specialised, functions.

  • Architects consider local climate and conditions when designing buildings.

  • Passive solar design principles can help reduce our reliance on electrical energy for heating, cooling and lighting of spaces.

Using the information you collected on your school safari, create a mind map to explore possible ideas for the redesign of your chosen learning space. Try to reduce the reliance on electricity to control the temperature inside the building. You could use online software such as bubbl.us or popplet to construct your mind map.

Show the “before and after” by taking a photo of the existing space to be redesigned for your folio. Use photo editing software such as Adobe Photoshop Elements to lighten the photo and print a copy at A4 size. Add your design modifications to the printed image. Label the diagram to explain function, suggest colours and materials and show how the design will improve the space. See an example of this process. Examine how other students have sketched their ideas.

Group of students discussing designs

Individually, or as a group, present your design ideas to the class. Share in Google Drive PMI feedback form (Google Docs) to the audience to gather feedback.

If necessary, modify your designs based on feedback from your presentation.
