What about Microsoft Forms? Link item

Many teachers are very familiar with the ease and usefulness of Google Forms, which is part of the DoE G Suite service. But did you know that Microsoft Forms, which is part of the DoE Office 365 service, offers similar functionality? • create formative and summative assessments
  • include mathematical equations for quizzes
  • flip your classroom
  • add branching options
  • build Flows that act on Forms responses

You never know what you might be able to use MS Forms for in your school or with your students. If you like using OneNote or MS Teams, then it's worth taking some time to learn about the complementary Forms tool to see what other great educational opportunities can be found in Office 365. New Apple Caching Server News item

Apple made a major announcement late last year about a new Mac Mini desktop model. They also immediately removed the previous model that was listed on the DoE Online Catalogue. This meant that schools wanting to buy a device to use as an Apple Caching Server were unable to do so. We are pleased to advise that we have completed a solution to build the new Mac Mini model as an Apple Caching Server running the latest Mojave MacOS. All new Minis will be managed centrally via a department-provided MDM service. Apple has placed the new Mac Mini models onto the DoE Online Catalogue for purchase by schools. Just search for the term CACHING at the top of the Catalogue. A new landing page for Apple Caching Servers has been published, providing further information.

ICT PLUS+ for school leaders News item

Currently, schools use multiple separate services to find information about the ICTs in use in their school. With the ICT PLUS+ dashboard, school leaders will be able to see how the internet connection is performing and check device inventory data including type, age and warranty information. The T4L team proudly presents the start of a new way to access information about technology available in your school. The ICT PLUS+ dashboard is live and ready for school leaders to use when planning for improvement in applying technology to learning, teaching and administration. Also on the dashboard, we've included the draft ICT Maturity Framework for schools. Still under review, this document aims to help schools to self-assess their use of technology across a range of areas. We want to work with schools to improve this framework. If your school would like access to the ICT PLUS+ dashboard and help us to refine our support model, we'd love to hear from you. You'll be contributing to case studies that will help other schools learn from the great uses of technology that we know are happening across the department. Get in touch with Eric Land at eric.land@det.nsw.edu.au to be involved in this project.

Check your Windows Start button Info item

If it looks like the one on the left, then plan to fix it ASAP.

It's time to switch from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Talk to your ICT Coordinator.

Windows 10 has been available to all schools since November 2016 via eT4L as a self-serve rebuild. All new computers added to your school can only be built with Windows 10. The total count of Windows 10 devices in our schools far exceeds those still running Windows 7. However, Windows 7, which is almost 10 years old still represents a significant portion of our total fleet. Please identify all Windows 7 PCs at your site and set a timeframe for rebuilding each of them. Schedule to rebuild as many as possible each week until all are upgraded. ITD are centrally monitoring progress and will be reminding schools regularly of the importance of removing older platforms as soon as possible. So far this year over 25,000 PCs have been updated from Windows 7 to 10. How many Windows 7 PCs are still at your school?

Did Minecraft EE stop working? Info item

A recent app update for Minecraft Education Edition (MEE) caused a problem in some schools - "We can't connect to the service you need right now". Working with Microsoft, we can confirm that MEE now requires Windows 10 v1709 installed to function correctly. Older versions of Windows 10 will no longer run Minecraft. Rebuilding the PC to the latest eT4L Windows 10 and reinstalling the app from the Microsoft Store, will resolve the issue - and is highly recommended anyway. Apple iPads running the MEE app will continue to work fine. In other news, Microsoft have released a desktop version of MEE for Windows, providing an alternative option to deploy and install the app. It has been submitted for packaging and inclusion in the eT4L Software Catalogue, which will then allow deployment via UDM. This option will be the easiest way to setup MEE on computers shared by multiple students. If interested, you can read more about the MEE desktop program.

Minecraft Education Edition now REQUIRES Win 10 1709 or later.
