Fibre in food products

Yoghurt and other probiotic foods use a variety of soluble fibres to maintain the life of the bacterial culture during storage and digestion, as well as to give extra thickness and prevent curdling during storage.

Examine the ingredients list on yoghurt labels to identify the fibres added as thickeners. They may be identified as plant gums or resistant starch.

You can also find psyllium husks and bran in a variety of cereals in your supermarket. They may be available in a natural form, processed into pellets, powdered, or in capsules. You can add them to your breakfast cereal, take them with water or juice, or mix them into sauces or casseroles.
